Pozdravy z polepšovny (Greetings From the Reformatory)

From nihilism to the rediscovery of love.

Berlin-based indie-pop artist Anna Vaverková releases her debut album Pozdravy z polepšovny (Greetings From the Reformatory) under Brno label Kabinet Records.

The album was recorded in Berlin's L.A. Recordings studio during 2022, with the financial support of the German Initiative Musikfund. The recordings were made by Anna Vaverková and Liam Blomqvist, who were joined by some exceptionally talented session musicians on drums, strings, wind, harp, and more.

T
he record touches on themes and feelings of uncertainty and fear, which refer to the political events of early 2022. The listener is dragged from the brink of nihilism, via a flirtation with Dadaism, to the rediscovery of love.

About Anna:

Anna is based in Berlin, and has since 2018 been a founding member of indie group The Flavians. With the latter, Anna has performed at Glastonbury and the Reeperbahn festival, to name a few. Just prior to the outbreak of the Covid pandemic in 2020, the band released their debut album “Ordinary People in an Ordinary World,” which they were unable to tour due to travel restrictions.

With the unexpected abundance of time in lockdown, Anna began writing her own songs. Due to homesickness and dissatisfaction with her lyrics in English, she decided to create in her native language - Czech.

Nevertheless, the emotive vocal performances and beautiful musicality of these songs transcend language in connecting with the listener. Her debut EP Roztomilá Holka from 2022 caught the attention of the wider public and her own work earned Anna nominations for three music awards - Vinyla for Discovery of the Year, Apollo for Best Single of 2022 and Anděl Awards in the Alternative and Electronica category.

Pozdravy z polepšovny features the contributions of great musicians - Tobias Humble on drums (James McCartney, Gang of Four), Kelly O’Donohue on trumpets and trombone (Vance Joy), Tomas Liska on double bass (Invisible World), Peter Mojzeš on strings (Ben Cristovao, DeFacto Quartet),  Andy Aquarius on Harp, and others.
